Press Release :

‘African Scream Contest’ is the third release by the Analog Africa label. The project initially took off in August 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector Samy Ben Redjeb arrived in Cotonou, Benin, “without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what I found in the process cannot really be described in words”. This first trip was followed by eight more to the region. Thirty months and few thousand records later Analog Africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation (on CD and limited edition double vinyl).

Ben Redjeb conducted 16 interviews in various cities in Benin and Togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44 pages booklet which also features many rare photographs directly received from the artists.

Like most modern music in French-speaking West African countries, the music of Benin and Togo was influenced by a few main musical currents: Cuban, Congolese and local traditional music, as well as Chanson Francaise. Additionally, the geographical location of Benin and Togo - sandwiched between Ghana and Nigeria - exposed Beninian and Togolese musicians to Highlife music. The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninian music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin’s modern music.

Benin is the birth place of Vodun (or, as it is known in the West, Voodoo), and some of the rhythms used during traditional rituals - Sakpata, Sato, Agbadja, Tchenkoumé and many others - were fused to Soul and Latin music as early as the mid-1960s and later to Funk. That fusion is the essence of this compilation.

In the late 60s and early 70s rock and soul music started creeping into the region. In particular, the music of James Brown and Johnny Hallyday became immensely popular with university students. It was then that the music scene in Benin really started to take off.

What made this musical revolution even more interesting is that most of the musicians could not read music. Often the music they made sounded one beat away from being out of tune, but somehow they always managed to bring all the elements together into something new and exciting.

One of the greatest bands of their era, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, who are of course featured on this compilation, took the Afro sound to another level by showing their musical versatility in many forms. Although they were consciously copying western artists, they would always inject a dose of psychedelic Afro grooves that would make their music unmistakably Beninian. Their biggest song, ‘Gbeti Madjro’ is believed to have revolutionised the music industry in Benin in the 70s when the country went through a period of political turmoil. The song is full of raw breaks and the hypnotic rhythms as well as screams a la James Brown - after this song many bands in Benin started screaming on their recordings, hence the title of this compilation.

Latin-influenced sounds are present on this compilation, too. Ouidah, a city on the Atlantic coast of Benin, is home to a large Brazilian community, or, as they are called in Benin, “Agoudas”. Members of that community are descendents of slaves who returned from Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Their dances (such as Kaléta and Buriyanj) and songs are still being performed and fused into the traditional Beninian rituals. That, too, can be heard in modern Beninian music.

The proximity of the giant neighbour Nigeria can be heard on the track ‘Djanfa Magni’ which features the amazing trumpeter/ saxophonist Tidjani Koné fronting the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. Koné whose career started in Mali with the Rail Band de Bamako, of which he was the founder and the band leader played with Fela Kuti for a short while hence the Afrobeat influence.

There are countless stories to be discovered in the extremely well-researched booklet and the music is truly mind-blowing. Delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic Afro sounds from 70s Benin and Togo and experience the African Scream Contest.

A word from the producer Samy Ben Redjeb:

This project initially took off in August, 2005 when I arrived in Cotonou without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records.
What I found in the process cannot really be described in words. This first trip was followed by eight more to the region. Thirty Months and a few thousand Records later Analog Africa is proud to present this compilation which comes with a 44 pages full liners notes and features many rare photographs handed to me directly by the artists.

16 interviews were made and recorded in various cities in Benin & Togo with musicians, producers & sound engineers who kindly offered their support to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene. Composers gave me a detailed biography, hilarious anecdotes and sometimes the story behind their song. (S)

Four Star reviews around the Globe :

“One of the most satisfying and exciting records of
the year so far.”
Music Week

“A thrilling discovery.”
The Observer

“An explosive afro-funk collection dripping in the
feel of hot nights in crumbling mud-brick nightclubs.”
The Daily Telegraph

“Raucous funk gems from the 1970s.”
The Word

“Samy Ben Redjeb has struck black gold here.”
Time Out*****

“One of the party albums of the year … extraordinary
music that mostly never heard in the west.”
The Guardian ****

“I can’t think of a more invigorating way to start the
day than with this wriggling bag of jagged, ragged 70s
funk.”
Songlines ****

“The rawest funk, roughest guitars and squawkingest
saxes.”
Mojo ****

“The music lives up to the title: funky electric
guitars, honking saxophones and voodoo rhythms, with
strong influences from soul, highlife and Latin
music.”
Evening Standard ****

“Astounding.”
Kruger magazine

“Wonderfully eccentric arrangement and tuning …
Browntastic.”
The Wire

“Sterling work.”
Observer Music Monthly

“Benin and Togo mixed highlife and nascent Afrobeat
into a psychedelic echo chamber.”
Financial Times ****

“An exuberant blend of Cuban, Congolese and high-life
strains, streaked with slithery psychedelic guitar
fills.”
The Independent (Independent Music supplement)

“When New York slicksters thought they were at the
centre of the universe - Studio 54, say – these bands
were taking the coolest parts of funk, soul and disco,
reinventing it and, at the same time, transforming
their own music and culture… A lot of the reaction
to West African blues has focused on origins and a
going-back-to-roots, but the groove in Benin and Togo
was far deeper and far more inventive than that.”
BBC Music Online

“One funky freak-out of a history lesson.”

SEUN KUTI’s Interview for Getupandthink{no comment}

Photobucket

This is an exclusive interview with Seun Kuti for Getupandthink before the world-wide release of his first album with Egypt 80 on the 26 of April , he will also feature next month on the next Brownswood compilation for Gilles Peterson so just before he hits France live at The Bataclan for the second time on the 26 of May ,the son of the master of Afro-beat Fela Kuti ,Seun gives us an insight about his experience in the studio with World Music top producer Martin Meissonier, Malaria and the suffering of African children , Politics & the war on Iraq as well as his personal vision of Senator Barack Obama in the US presidential race…..

Photobucket

NESS:
Now Seun, your first album is finally coming out , tell us what you have learnt from this first experience and what you enjoyed the most from those recording sessions ?

SEUN KUTI :
Every experience is a learning process…… I learnt alot being in the studio recording my own album. what i enjoyed the most is enjoying the music and recording !!!

NESS:
Many Things is obviously the Single on the Album with it’s highly melancholic feeling and strong song structure to it , there is a speech of Umaru Yar’Adua, your president at the begining of the song, do you fear any censorship in your country regarding that track ?

SEUN KUTI :
I know the begining might never be played on the radio here, hahahaha !!!!

NESS:
Another outstanding track from your album called Mosquito’s bite is one of the fastest song in Afro-beat ever since
‘Roforofo Fight’ in 1972 , could you explain for us the message and how that song came to your inspiration ?

SEUN KUTI :
It was my manager (Producer) Martin that suggested i write a song for malaria and i didnt hesitate after i saw how many
children are still dying from such a preventive and curable parasite……..: The song therefore is a wake
up call to the government to fight malaria for the people.

NESS :
At last Afro-beat music is spreading fast accross the world nowdays, hundreds of band play this music, do you think in the
near future you will collaborate with other like your father did in the past ?, ( Ginger Baker and Roy ayers)

SEUN KUTI :
Yeah I have the dream of collaborating with other artists but i dont have anyone in mind but i believe its
something that will happen when it happens……

NESS:
Bob Marley said in a rare interview: ‘Reggae Music is the people’s Music,
Reggae music is News’ do you think we could also say the same about Afro-Beat ?

SEUN KUTI :
Yes you can reggae for the carribean people afrobeat for the whole black race!!!!!!

NESS:
In December 2007, Nigeria exported 2.2 million barrels of crude oil per day, amounting to 68.2 million barrels sold at
$87.19 per barrel for delivery to consumers within the period under review.
Do you think the situation is worst in Nigeria than ever ?

SEUN KUTI :
The situation is nigeria has always been the same the rich getting richer and the poor getting nothing at all

Photobucket

NESS:
The current market jitters are centred on disturbances in the world’s credit markets. Worries about the viability of sub-prime mortgage lending have spread around the financial system, and the central banks have been forced to pump in billions of dollars to oil the wheels of lending. Do you think the war on Iraq with the US has had a major role or impact on this current world financial situation ?

SEUN KUTI :
Its all about money and america has wasted a lot of money on the war and now that america has control of
iraq oi,l oil prices have topped 100$ per barrel so its not a coincidence…..

NESS:
Now for my classic question: If you had a chance to be elected
president for a year in your country, what would you radically change?

SEUN KUTI :
I will re-educate the people in what it really means to be fufilled and sucessful because my people have
lost the basic essence of self respect !!!

NESS:
Do you think Barak Oboma, maybe the first US Black President has a
fair chance to win the elections in November and could he change the
policies on Foreign affairs ?

SEUN KUTI :
Barak obama is a good guy that i respect personally for being brave enough to take on the chance of becoming
POTUS. I will wait and see what he does because its dangerous to trust men these days, especially those in politics !!!!

FEVA, Julien Lourau, DJ Ness - Afrobeat vs Jazz{no comment}

Afrobeat vs Jazz

L’association F.E.L.A.

Borrowing African, Latin and Brazilian LP’s from his mum and Jazz and Soul from his dad (some of which never made it back!) he had a varied musical background and a voracious habit of finding evermore new sounds and rhythms from around the world. In 2001 it was time to put 10 years of collecting and Dj’ing to use and he started Soundway Records after a trip to Ghana that inspired him to compile and release the Ghana Soundz albums, putting together rare and unreleased afrobeat and afro-fusion tracks from 70’s Ghana available outside of Africa for the first time.

Since Soundway has evolved so has the demand for the DJ services that go hand in hand with the label duties. Having started out doing underground parties in London and Manchester in the early nineties whilst a teenager (playing to back rooms and chill-out areas gave him to opportunity to play a generous mix of all styles and surprise people without the need to be the main attraction), he got a feel for what makes people move whilst remaining intent on peppering his sets with tracks that no-one knew or could get but keeping away from the snobbery of the Jazz-funk or Rare groove scenes that often professed that good music should always be rare and unavailable (There’s always a place for the classics!).

Miles has played at clubs and events around the world in the last few years as well as co-running a successful and unique night in Brighton England- the Afrobase sessions, mixing tropical dance music new and old from around the world, that has been running on the seafront every month for over three years. We have also recently started bi-monthly Soundway events in Hackney, London. Studio productions include being one half of Latin remix duo “Los Hermanos Latinos”.

The Soundway DJ policy is clear – we play upbeat tropical music from Latin America, Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean alongside the odd bit of Funk, Jazz, reggae and soul as well modern tracks and remixes with a similar flavour – anything from Nigerian Afrobeat to Colombian Cumbia, Samba from Brazil, Reggae and Calypso, Brazilian broken beat and Afro Hip Hop. If it’s got a positive feeling and a rhythmic complexity and we like it then it’s on the agenda. We feel we are the only DJ collective doing what we do, playing music from 1950 to 2007, much of which you won’t hear elsewhere, some of which you will.

Recent Gigs have included the Chicago World Music festival, Womad UK, Glastonbury, the Big Chill festival, The Candela festival (Puerto Rico), Notting Hill Carnival (London, UK), Teatro Festival (Amsterdam), Turntables on the Hudson (NYC- regular guest), Womad Festival, Turning Point (Toronto bi-annual guest), Salon Daome (Montreal -bi annual guest) Jelly Jazz (UK), Supporting Seun Kuti and the Africa 70 (Brighton, UK), Bol De Funk (Marseille), La Santanera (Mexico - with Nickodemus and Quantic) as well as club Gigs in Spain, France, USA, Sweden, Germany UK and Holland.
